Grand Opening: The Haw River Ballroom
We attended the grand opening Friday night of The Haw River Ballroom. What was once a cotton mill in Saxapahaw, NC now houses a unique music/arts venue and will serve as a gathering place for the community. Opening to a sold out crowd, The Love Language, The Old Ceremony and Paperhand Puppet Intervention did not disappoint. What a fun evening!
Housed in an old mill overlooking the Haw River this historic building had been home to cotton mills since 1844. In 1994 the 250,000 sq ft mill and 31 acres was purchased, and the revitalization of this beautiful area begin. Located not far from Chapel Hill, in addition to the ballroom, you’ll find the acclaimed Saxapahaw General Store, known as the “Five Star Gas Station”, Saturdays in Saxapahaw, which features a farmers market and local music and arts, and The Eddy Pub, serving local food and beverages. Plus numerous other eclectic shops and businesses. Hats off to the vision that brought this all together. It’s become one of our favorite places.
In this photo, to the left you’ll see the sign to the entrance of The Haw River Ballroom. Repurposed from an old dye vat and lit from inside, holes were punched through to spell out the name. Another dye vat sits inside contributing to the ambient lighting and a reminder of the buildings historic roots. You can see more of my photos from Friday night HERE.
All the photos were shot with my wide angle lens, 10–22mm, this photo was shot at 12mm, ISO400, f4.0. Best viewed LARGE.

Hi Doris. I’m a friend of the owners of the mill and the Ballroom as well as the lead designer of the project. If at all possible, I’d like to ask about the possibility of using a photo or two of yours on our website. Your photos are gorgeous. I’d seem them when you first posted them awhile back. You can reach me at CLJohnson@mac.com. Please let me know if that would be possible. Thanks so much, take care!
